The Bionic Woman is an American television series which spun off from The Six Million Dollar Man. It starred Lindsay Wagner as Jaime Sommers, a tennis professional who was nearly killed in a skydiving accident, and was rebuilt by Oscar Goldman (Richard Anderson) and Dr. Rudy Wells (Martin E. Brooks), who had also rebuilt The Six Million Dollar Man. As the result of her surgical implantation, Jaime Sommers had amplified hearing, a greatly strengthened right arm, and enhanced legs, enabling her to run faster than a speeding car.

The series ran on ABC for 2 seasons, from 1976 to 1977, and then it was picked-up for airing on NBC from 1977 to 1978, for just one season. Its run on ABC was successful with good ratings, coming in as the fifth most-watched show of in its first season, and finishing in the top 15 (#14) at the end of its second season. At the end of its second season, ABC decided not to renew the show, feeling it was no longer attracting the kind of demographics that ABC wanted. Competing network NBC revived the show for its third and final season.

The Bionic Woman DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs

The Bionic Woman was among the most popular American television series in 70’s. It was aired from ABC channel in 1976 and continued to run till 1977. From 1977 to 1978, NBC broadcasted the series for one season. It was spun off from Lee Majors’s popular The Six Million Dollar Man. Lindsay Wagner played the iconic role of bionic woman, as Jaime Sommers.

The character of Sommers was of a professional tennis player who barely survived from a skydiving accident. The rebuilders of Steve Austin (Six Million Dollar man) Oscar Goldman and Dr. Rudy Wells came to rescue for Jaime and made her bionic woman by special surgical implants.

They amplified hearing of her right ear by many times, implanted her right arm and cyber arms, and enhanced her legs, for he to run with speed more than a car, turning her into a complete cyber-human bionic woman, just like Six Million Dollar Man. The roles of Oscar and Dr. Rudy were revised by Richard Anderson and Martin E. Brooks.

The show had very popular viewer rating when aired on ABC in 1976, and its first season gained status of 5th most watched show. At the end of second season, it ranked at No. 14, when ABC decided not to continue the show due to decline in popularity. ABC also considered the demographics unsatisfactory. Then NBC picked up the show and aired 3rd and last season.

Overview

“The Bionic Woman” initially was titled as a two-part episode of The Six Million Dollar Man, which was aired in 1975. Jaime Sommers first appeared in this episode when Steve (Lee Majors) visited his hometown Ojai in California, to meet his parents, and to buy a ranch. There, he met Jaime and recalled the older relationship with then top American tennis player Sommers. Steve proposed her in that trip.

They went for an outing, where Jamie had an accident in skydiving from her malfunctioned parachute, and went near death due to serious traumatic injuries in head, legs, and right arm. Steve very emotionally requested his surgeons Goldman to save her, and in return, offered for her to become an operative of the Office of Scientific Intelligence (OSI), which was branch of CIA. Goldman agreed and assigned Dr. Rudy Wells and his bionic’s team to rebuild Jaime Sommers. The role of Dr. Wells was played by Alan Oppenheimer.

Jaime’s rebuilding was of the same kind as Steve Austin, but unlike Steve, the cost of her rebuilding was not shown. Though, due to smaller parts, as compared to Steve, the cost of her rebuilding were supposed to be less than Six Million Dollars, but the German dub of the show entitled it as Die Sieben Millionen Dollar Frau, meaning, the Seven Million Dollar Woman.

After rebuilding, Jamie, with her 2 bionic legs was able to run at speed of 60mph. With her bionic arm, she was able to throw objects to great distances. Unlike Steve, who was given a cyber eye, Jamie was implanted with a bionic ear, to hear voices from miles away.
