Jem is an American animated television series that ran from 1985 to 1988 in U.S. first-run syndication. The show is about music company owner Jerrica Benton, her singer alter-ego, Jem, her band the Holograms, and their adventures.

The series was a joint collaboration by Hasbro, Marvel Comics, and Sunbow Productions, the same team responsible for GI Joe and Transformers. The creator of the series was Christy Marx, who also had been a staff writer for the aforementioned programs. The animation was provided by a Japanese animation studio called Toei Doga (now Toei Animation).

The show was originally designed to appeal to both girls and boys, with a mix of action/adventure, drama, music, and fashion. As the show progressed, the audience gradually became almost entirely girls.

Jem DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs â€" An Animated Series

Jem, or Jem and the Holograms, is a TV animation that was broadcasted in first run syndication from 1985 till 1988. The TV series story was about Jerrica Benton who owns a music company, the singer Jem and the band Holograms.

In fact, Jem is not only a band singer and front woman; she is also the alter ego of Jerrica Benton who owns Starlight Music. Jerrica was able to have this fake personality thanks to a computer holograph named Synergy. The program was invented by her father as an ultimate audio-visual entertainment synthesizer that Jerrica inherited.

She was able to control the program and project “the Jem hologram” through herself thanks to remote projectors in her earrings. The projectors were very microscopic and allowed her to hide her personality by changing her features and clothes.

Her goal was to make money for her music company and also for Starlight Girls Foundation founded by her mother as a foster program. The band consists of: Kimber Benton, Jerrica’s younger sister, a major song writer, Guitarist with a Keyboardist, Aja Leith, and Shana Elmsford which is synth drums.

A new character will appear: Carmen “Raya” in order to replace Shana that will leave to pursue a fashion career. Even when Shana will return, Carmen will stay the Drummer and Shana will take the guitar. Jem’s identity is only revealed to the holograms along with the existence of synergy.

The main storylines of the animation are about Jerrica’s struggle to keep her identity secret and to protect the synergy from any potential hazard. She also tries to protect the girls who are in the holograms with her. The house where the girls were hosted will be burned in the first episodes. They will then stay in the Starlight Mansion that they win in the “Battle Of The Bands” beside a contract in a movie offered by a movie producer Howard Sands.

In the Holograms, there two other rival bands; one of them is The Misfits; rude rich girl Pizzazz and her cohorts: Roxy and Kindhearted. They will be joined at later episodes by a manipulative British saxophonist Jetta. The Misfits always try to make plans to defeat Jem and the holograms. All this plots are encouraged by their manager Eric Raymond who also owns half of Starlight Company.

In the third season, a new band will step in called Stingers. The band is composed of Riot, lead singer, Rapture the Guitarist, Minx on keyboard. For the last episode, a truce will be declared by the three bands since Ba Nee, one of the foster girls, whose lost father will be found by Jem and the Holograms.
