Mama's Family is an American television sitcom that premiered on NBC on January 22, 1983. It ended its run on that network in May 1984 when it was cancelled, but NBC would continue to air reruns until September 1985. In 1986, Mama's Family returned in syndication, where it aired for an additional four seasons, ending on March 12, 1990. Mama's Family is a spin-off of a recurring series of comedy sketches called The Family, which appeared on The Carol Burnett Show in the 1970s.

The show, set in the small fictional Southern town of Raytown, revolved around a typical squabbling family, headed by Thelma Harper — a buxom, blue-haired, purse-lipped, 65-year-old widow, who is loudmouthed and outspoken. Living with Thelma originally was only her uptight spinster sister Fran, a journalist for a local paper. Thelma's son, Vinton (whose wife, Mitzi, had left him to become a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas, Nevada) and his two children, Sonja and Buzz, moved in with her later.

During the first season, Vinton forged a relationship with the Harper’s flirtatious next-door neighbor Naomi Oates (whom Thelma had a distaste for), and soon married her. Also seen on a recurring basis were Thelma’s two daughters: the snobbish Ellen (Betty White), and the ornery Eunice (Carol Burnett). Harvey Korman, who directed many of the earlier episodes, made featured appearances as Eunice’s husband, Ed Higgins. He also appeared at the beginning of each episode as the stuffed shirt Alistair Quince, who would soberly introduce the program in the style of Masterpiece Theatre. These monologues were cut out of the later syndicated reruns and the subsequent DVD release of the first season.

The Mama’s Family DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs

The TV sitcom Mama’s Family was first aired on NBC channel the 22nd January, 1983. A year later, the American show will be cancelled on May. Reruns will be broadcasted after and stop in September 1985.

After a year, the TV show will be aired in first-run syndication for four seasons until February 1990. In fact, Mama’s Family is the spin-off of the Family sketch comedy that was aired during the show “The Carol Burnett” in the 1970s.

The main actions of the TV sitcom happen in the small town Raytown. The storylines are mainly about a family that engages in many quarrels. The head of the family is a 65 years old woman named Thelma Harper; a very talkative and forthright person.

The old widow has white hair that looks like blue, and she is very healthy and lively. In house, her sister Fran lives with her that works as a journalist in the local newspaper. The son of Thelma Vinton and his two kids, Sonja and Buzz also live there after his wife left him to work as a cocktail waitress in the city of Las Vegas.

Vinton will engage in a relationship with his neighbor Naomi Oates and will get married during the first season. Thelma never liked her flirting neighbor. During most of the show, Vinton and his wife will be forced to live in the basement of Thelma’s house because Naomi sold her house and lost the money in a bad investment.

During the sitcom, the two daughters of Thelma will make appearance in the show. One of them is Ellen played by Betty White; a very pretentious girl. The other one is Eunice featured by Carol Burnett who is always in a bad temper. The director of the first episodes Harvey Korman will also make appearance as the husband of Eunice, Ed Higgins. This character will be removed from the show later and Ed will leave his wife.

The ratings of the TV sitcom did not get very high but it was sufficient to produce another season of it. When the first episode was broadcasted, in which Vinton and his children moves in with Thelma, rated top 30 among the other programs. It was number 28 for the week rating with a score of 18.6/28 rating per share. Nevertheless, the second season was not that successful and reached only 56th in the ratings because of the high competition in CBS channel.
