Martin was an American sitcom produced by HBO Independent Productions (a subsidiary of HBO) that aired for five seasons, from August 27, 1992 to May 1, 1997 on FOX. The show starred actor-comedian Martin Lawrence, Thomas Mikal Ford, Carl Anthony Payne II, Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell as Gina.

Reflecting the rising popularity of the FOX network throughout the 1990s, Martin was one of their highest-rated shows during the sitcom's five-season run. Reruns air in syndication in most major U.S. cities, and also air daily nationwide on the TV One cable network.

Set in Detroit, this sitcom stars Martin Lawrence in the role of Martin Payne, a young disc jockey who in later seasons becomes a television talk-show host, and his comic misadventures with his closest friends. Martin works for the fictional radio station WZUP, and later for local public-access TV station Channel 51. A common theme of the series is Martin's derisive and brash nature; episodes often center on Martin's inconsideration towards his friends, neighbors, and whomever else might find themselves in his presence. When all is said and done, though, Martin loves his family and friends - it just takes dire situations to bring it to light.

HBO Independent Production, a subsidiary of HBO, produced a hit sitcom during the 1990s called Martin. The show was televised on Fox channel for five seasons starting 27th August, 1992 until 1st May, 1997. The sitcom comprised many comedy stars such as Martin Lawrence, Tichina Arnold, Thomas Mikal Ford, Tisha Campbell and Carl Anthony Payne.

In the 1990s, Martin sitcom was a hit and got the highest rating for all the five seasons while aired on Fox network. Even when the show Must See TV” was broadcasted on NBC, African Americans spectators would rather go for Martin, New York Undercover and Living Single. These three were the most watched sitcoms among African Americans during 1996 and 1997.

The setting of the show was in Detroit city, Michigan. The main character Martin Payne was played by the comedy star Martin Lawrence and the costar was his girlfriend Gina played by the actress Ticha Campbell-Martin. In the sitcom, Martin was a disc jockey who works with a radio station named WZUP and after that in the Channel 51 of local public TV station. The character of Martin had sarcastic and audacious features.

The episodes mainly emphasize about how careless Martin is with his friends and anyone in his entourage. Even though, Martin loves his family and friends and needs only the right moments to demonstrate it.

During the show, Martin will lose his job as a disc jockey in station and will host a TV show named “Word on the Street” in the local TV channel. In the final episode, Martin will have the intention move to Los Angeles with his girlfriend Gina to start broadcasting his talk show from there.

Meanwhile, Gina will get promoted by her boss Mr. Whitaker to work in Los Angeles headquarters because of the shut down of Detroit office. On the other hand, Pam (Gina’s coworker who was fired after this downsizing) will go for a new career in music industry and hold the position of artists and repertoire executive. During the first episodes of the show, Martin Lawrence gives a monologue about his character in the radio studio.
