China Beach is the name of an American dramatic television series set at an evacuation hospital during the Vietnam War. The title refers to a beach in the city of Da Nang, Vietnam, that was nicknamed China Beach by unknown foreigners. The ABC TV drama aired for three years (four TV seasons), from 1988 to 1991.

Created by William Broyles, Jr. and John Sacret Young, the series looks at the Vietnam War from a unique perspective: that of the women, military and civilian, who were present during the conflict. John Wells took over most of the series beginning with the second season — many of the show's cast members would appear later on the Wells-produced series, ER.

Set in the Vietnam locale nicknamed 'China Beach', at the 510th Evacuation Hospital and R&R (the "Five-and-Dime" Rest & Recreation) facility, the cast of characters includes US Army doctors and nurses, officers, soldiers, Red Cross volunteers, and civilian personnel (American, French, and Vietnamese). Very often, however, the series features the experiences of the characters when returning to the U.S., either on leave or at the end of their tour of duty.

The show did not shy away from showing the gruesomeness of war, providing a very gritty view of the experience there.

What an amazing DVD Set for the China Beach Fan!

China Beach DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs " True Depiction of War

An American theatrical TV series staged at an emigration hospital for the period of the Vietnam War is the one which we refer to as China Beach. My Khe[1] beach is what the title is referred to, which is found near the city of Da Nang in Vietnam. This was given a pet name by some unidentified foreigners as ‘China Beach’. This drama was aired on ABC for three years, starting from 1988 and ending in 1991. However, during that time a number of 4 seasons were broadcasted.

This series was a creation of William Broyles, Jr. and Jogn Sacret Young. It focused on the Vietnam War, but, from a different perspective. It took into account the women, civilians and armed forces recruits who were undoubtedly present at the time of the war and during this conflict. With the commencement of the second season, John Wells was the actor who absorbed the major part of the series. Various other cast members came along afterward on the series produced by Wells, ER.

The set of the series was in the city of Da Nang, right in front of the Furama Resort of Vietname, which was pet-named ‘China Beach’, at the 510th Evacuation Hospital and R&R facility, also known as the “Five and Dime” Rest and Recreation.

The characters included doctors and nurses of American Army, soldiers officers, unpaid workers or volunteers of Red Cross, as well as civilian people of different nationalities such as American, French and of course, Vietnamese. Time and again, a feature episode is broadcasted by the series in which the characters are shown experiencing different incidents, on the way to their home "America " either by taking a leave or having done with their duty.

The show also focused on how horrible and shocking the war was, in regards of the loss, and allowed very courageous shows of the incidents happening there. For the production of this series, the producer has been known to look for advice from ex-army men and nurses who were in Vietnam at the time of war. One name notable amongst those is Diane Carlson Evans.

Very odd and out-of-the-box methods and ideas were used during the story-telling process, including shots showcased in ‘reverse chronology’; to display a charter’s mental situation, animated cartoons were used; and a call by the cast members to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in the city of Washington. China Beach was praised by TV critics but did not receive very good ratings from the audience. ABC consistently aired the four seasons for three continuous years, but the finale was suspended till the fall of 1990, finally airing on 22nd July, 1991.

Due to the haphazard schedule of its broadcasts, Dana Delany was nominated for the Best Actress Emmy for fall 1992 awards, and eventually won. Considering that when she won the award, more than half of the series had already been filmed 1.5 years ago and the finale was aired no more than year earlier.
