Knots Landing is a primetime television soap opera that aired from December 27, 1979 to May 13, 1993 on CBS. Set in a fictitious coastal suburb of Los Angeles in California, the show centered around the lives of four married couples residing in a cul-de-sac, Seaview Circle. Initially intended to be a "scenes from a marriage" type drama series, storylines also included rape, murder, kidnapping, assassinations, drug smuggling, corporate intrigue and criminal investigations. By the time of its conclusion, Knots Landing had become one of the longest-running primetime dramas on U.S. television after Gunsmoke, and tied second place with Bonanza (although Bonanza had made far more episodes).

Knots Landing was created by David Jacobs (one-time writer of Family and later producer of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) in conjunction with producer Michael Filerman (who also co-produced Falcon Crest), who were initially rebuffed by CBS in 1978, as the network instead accepted the more "saga-like" Dallas. After Dallas became a hit, CBS asked Jacobs to adapt Knots Landing as a spinoff of that show, hoping to extend its success. The series was loosely inspired by the 1973 Ingmar Bergman movie, Scenes from a Marriage, but with four marriages. Though not as popular as Dallas, Knots Landing outlasted Dallas itself) and would win much critical acclaim. The series peaked during the 1983-84 season with a 20.8 rating (finishing in 11th place) and a 20.0 rating for the 1984-85 season (when it finished 9th). This can be attributed, in part, to more dramatic storylines as the series became more soap-opera like, and the gradual inclusion of newer characters to interact with the original cast. By the 1988-89 season, Knots Landing was ahead of Dallas in the ratings, though audiences for both shows by this time were less than their earlier years.

Knots Landing DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs â€" The Success Story (and the story)

A soap opera of American primetime TV, Knots Landing was telecasted from 27th December, 1979 till 13th of May, 1993 on CBS. The set was staged in a fake inshore colony of Los Angeles (California) and focused on a total of 4 married couples who lived in a dead-ended street, Sea view Circle.

Although, when the series started, it wanted to capture of Scenes from a Marriage drama series in it, and the plot included topics of rapes, killings, kidnapping, assassinations, drug dealing, unlawful investigations as well as corporate schemes.

By the end of the series, it came after Gunsmoke and Law and Order on American television, as the longest-running primetime production, and secured 3rd place with Bonanza, despite the fact that Bonanza’s episodes were more than that of Knots Landing. [1]

It was a production of David Jacobs and producer Michael Filerman. Jacob was also a one-time writer of Family and was a producer of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, later on. After this production, Filerman co-produced Falcon Crest. The idea of this series was snubbed in 1977 by CBS, as the need of them at that time was more for a series having “saga-like” qualities.

Dallas, a creation of Jacob was acknowledged then, and was premiered in 1978. Dallas met success, after which Jacob tailored Knots Landing as a sequel. Knots Landing was primarily an idea taken from Scenes from a Marriage (1973) movie by Ingmar Bergman, but included 4 marriages.

Knots Landing took time to be as popular and successful as Dallas, and in the end outsmarted it. The series topped when the season in years 1983-84 were being aired and received a rating of 20.8 (standing on 11th position) and for the season of years 1984-85, the ratings were 20.0, landing the series on 9th place.

This peak was due to the variant plots that were included in the series, as it moved on, making it the soap-opera like (as was demanded earlier) and also, on the regular addition of newer casts and characters, which starred with the original ones.

Knots Landing overtook Dallas in the ratings by the end of season for year 1988-99. However, the number of viewers was lesser for both of them, as compared to the earlier stats.

In a 2 part mini-series, Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac, most of the performers came together in year 1997. And in 2005, they were brought together again for a special non-fiction show entitled Knots Landing Reunion: Together Again, during which, the cast recalled the time spent, doing the series.

When Gary (Ted Shackelford) and Val (Joan Van Ark) reach California, they met their neighbors Sid Fairgate (Don Murray) and Karen Fairgate (Michele Lee) who described themselves as the “neighborhood Brady Bunch”. They have 3 offspring, all in their teenage: Eric, Diana and Michael, played by Steve Shaw, Claudia Lonow and Patrick Petersen respectively.

Sid’s daughter Annie, played by Karen Allen, only appeared once, that too in the pilot program of the series where she had sexual activity in her parent’s bed. Annie’s mother and Sid’s ex-wife â€" Susan Philby, played by Claudette Nevins also makes a single appearance in the first season’s episode entitled “Civil Wives”. None of them, however, appeared on Sid’s death day in the 3rd season.

Similarly, the daughter of Gary and Val â€" Lucy played by Charlene Tilton â€" also made her one and only appearance in season 1, but later on stayed in Dallas, although her parent’s master plan was to get her to California. There also lived a corporate attorney and his wife in the neighborhood, namely Richard (John Pleshette) and Laura Avery (Constance McCashin). They had a son, young Jason (James Houghton), and were the parents of newly-wedded Kenny and Ginger Ward (Kim Lankford).
