Cagney & Lacey is an American television series that first aired on the CBS television network for seven seasons from March 25, 1982 to May 16, 1988. It is considered to be American television's first serious drama series with two female leads[citation needed]. A police procedural, the show starred Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless as New York City police detectives who led very different lives: Christine Cagney (Gless) was a single, career-minded woman, while Mary Beth Lacey (Daly) was a married working mother. The series was set in a fictionalized version of Manhattan's 14th Precinct (Midtown South), which in real life is located at 357 West 35th Street.

Al Waxman co-starred as Cagney and Lacey's supervisor, Lt. Bert Samuels. Dan Shor joined the cast from 1985 to 1986 as detective Jonah Newman. Dick O'Neill played a recurring role as Cagney's alcoholic father, Charlie Cagney, a former NYPD officer who regaled her with stories of the old days; Christine later fought alcoholism as well.

Cagney & Lacey DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs â€" Suspense, Thrill & Discovery

Cagney & Lacey is an American TV series based on detective story. It was first on-aired on CBS television for seven seasons from March 1982 to May 1988. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly play main role in the play who acts as New York City police detectives with totally opposite lives.

Christine Cagney (Gless) is shown as a single, career oriented woman whereas Mary Beth Lacey (Daly) is playing a role of married working mother. This series was picturized in fabricated set up of Manhattan’s 14th Percinct.

Another very important character is Lt. Bert Samuels (Al Waxman) ; Cagney & Lacey’s supervisor. The co-stars include Carl Lumbly, Martin Kove, Sidney Clute, Marus Petrie, Victor Isbecki and Paul LaGuardia. John Karlen is shown as Lacey’s husband and reoccurring and important character of the series. Dick O’Neill acts as a Cagney father who is an alcoholic person.

In original movie, it was Loretta Swit who played the role of Cagney but later on, she had to quit and this movie was changed as a drama series. It was first telecasted with only six episodes as midseason replacement. At that time, Meg Foster played the role of Cagney. After observing its popularity it was taken and picked up for upcoming seasons constantly.

The only change made was the replacement of Foster by Sharon Gless. It was expected from Sharon Gless to be the best “feminine” character and CBS executives pressurized the producers to change the Christine into pompous lady of wealthy parents.

But Barney and Barbara did not listen to them and let Cagney play the role of working lady. Cagney has later on proved herself as the best actress as working class lady after receiving tremendous fame by significant number of fans.
