Columbo is an American crime fiction TV series, starring Peter Falk as Lieutenant Columbo, a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. The show popularized the inverted detective story format; almost every episode began by showing the commission of the crime and its perpetrator. Thus, there is no "whodunit" element, the plot revolving mainly on how the perptrator whose guilt is known would finally be exposed and arrested.

The character first appeared in a 1960 episode of the television-anthology series The Chevy Mystery Show. This was adapted into a stage play, and a TV-movie based on the play was broadcast, in 1968, as the pilot for a series. The series began on a Sunday presentation of the "NBC Mystery Movie" rotation, which included McCloud, McMillan & Wife, and other whodunits. The series spawned a similar format on Wednesday nights with fare such as The Snoop Sisters, Hec Ramsey, and Banacek. Columbo aired regularly on NBC from 1971 to 1978, and sporadically on ABC from 1989 to 2003.

Columbo is a scruffy-looking cop who is usually underestimated by his fellow officers, and by the murderer du jour. Despite his appearance and superficial absentmindedness, he solves all of his cases and manages to come up with the evidence needed for indictment.

Columbo DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs â€" Full of Thrill, Suspense & Adventure

An American fiction TV series, focusing on crime and titled “Columbo”, starred Peter Falk for the character of Lieutenant Columbo, who was a homicide detective for the Police Department of Los Angeles. This series was the creation of Richard Levinson and William Link.

For the most part, the episodes started with a crime being committed by criminal(s), while the story continues; focusing on the detective who, step-by-step and with the help of clues, finds out how the crime was committed, ending the series with the revelation of the perpetrator, who was already shown at the start of the episode.

Few of these episodes didn’t follow the normal pattern and included more twists and turns. The series lacked the “whodunit” ingredient and was also referred to as a “howcatchem” by its creators.

The appearance of this character was first made in an episode, telecasted in 1960, in a series named The Chevy Mystery Show, which was, to a certain extent, originated from a short story penned by the creators of Columbo and released as ‘Dear Corpus Delecti’ in an issue of Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. This TV drama was adapted by Levinson and Link and was presented as a stage play entitled ‘Prescription: Murder’.

Also, a TV-movie was also aired based on the same play in 1968. On a Wednesday, the series began, on the appearance of the “NBC Mystery Movie” rotation: McCloud, McMillan and Wife, and various other mysteries.

This series proceeded, as a group, to be aired on Sundays, after just one season. The series which replaced Columbo on Wednesdays included The Snoop Sisters, Banacek and Cool Million, all of which followed a similar system with fare.

The Columbo series was broadcasted as a regular one on NBC from 1971 till about 1978, but after then, at the start of 1989, the broadcasts were lessened in frequency on ABC. Recently, this series’ episode was aired in 2003 [2].

The character of Lieutenant Columbo is that of a scuffling, rumpled-looking American police detective, of Italian background, who appears to be naĂŻve, due to which he has to face steady amounts of sarcasm by his fellow colleagues and by the perpetrator alike.

All the people under investigation, at first, are free from anxiety and also, sidetracked by the detective’s inferred speech and irritating digressions throughout the investigation. Although, the detective appears to be vague and unpresentable, but his sharp and clever mind puts the puzzle pieces correctly, after having the required evidence in hand.

His eye, which got the evidence by its preciseness and accordance with details, becomes much more pronounced by the end of the plot. The length of all these episodes is equivalent to movies i.e. 75-100 minutes, after the exclusion the commercials.

TV Critics have also looked into this series, side-by-side with historians, because of how the characters and storyline worked in not in an obvious way, as did all the other mystery stories. The plot of this series has been regarded by TV Guide “howcatchem”, correctly known as reversed detective account.

In a usual mystery focusing on murders, the story goes along while the detective looks for clues to find out ‘who’ the murderer was, ending with the heroic and mind-blowing uncovering of the slaughterer, using those clues. In this series, however, the killer and his crime are shown at the start of the series and the audience is aware as to who did it and how.

The mystery for the viewers comes in when Columbo finds various clues and works them out, also, the tricked interviews with the suspects who’d reveal useful information, which will help Columbo in combining the hints to solve the case. This way, the episode is focused on unraveling the mystery from both Columbo’s and the murderer’s point of view, who play cat chasing a mouse.
