Matlock was a long-running American television legal drama. The show ran from September 23, 1986 to May 8, 1992 on NBC, where it replaced the long-running series The A-Team to Friday nights, then on November 5, 1992 until May 7, 1995 on ABC.

The format of the show was similar to that of Perry Mason, with Matlock identifying the murderer and then confronting him or her in a dramatic courtroom scene near the end. One difference, however, was that whereas Mason usually exculpated his clients at a pretrial hearing, Matlock usually secured an acquittal at trial, from the jury.

Coincidentally, some Perry Mason alumni appeared on the drama, such as R. G. Armstrong and Stacy Keach, Sr.

The show centered on widower Benjamin L. "Ben" Matlock (Andy Griffith). Matlock is a renowned, folksy, popular yet cantankerous defense attorney, (based on attorney Bobby Lee Cook, from Summerville Georgia,) who is worth every penny of his $100,000 fee. As part of "The Thief (Part1)" Matlock bartered his services for several rare coins in the defense of a coin dealer. His remark was "Look at it this way Michael. You just got $100,000.00 in legal services for just $13.00."  He has also solved and subsequently won at trial almost every case he has taken, especially murder cases where everyone else was sure his client was guilty, when at the end of the episode, the person who is sitting on the stand, is the actual killer. He studied law at Harvard, based his law practice in Atlanta, Georgia, and lived in a modest farmhouse in a neighboring suburb. He is known to visit the scene of the crime to discover clues otherwise overlooked and come up with viable, alternative theories of the crime in question (usually murder). Matlock also has conspicuously finicky fashion sense; he generally appeared in court wearing a trademark light gray suit and, over the nine seasons, was seen behind the wheel of three generations of the Ford Crown Victoria— always an all-gray model (Andy Griffith always drove Ford products in his 1960's show, The Andy Griffith Show, as with Matlock). Some Mayberry alumni had guest shots on the drama: Don Knotts, Aneta Corsaut, Betty Lynn and Arlene Golonka.

Matlock was noted for his thrift and a fondness for hot dogs. After the series ended, his penchant for hot dogs was explained in the episode Murder Two of the television show Diagnosis: Murder. In it, Matlock blames Dr. Mark Sloan for recommending a disastrous investment in 8-track cartridges. Matlock subsequently invested (and lost) his savings of $5000, while he survived by wearing cheap suits and living on hot dogs.

Matlock's thriftiness, liking for hot dogs, and the demands he placed upon his investigators were often points of comic relief in the series. Andy Griffith's prior career as a comic often showed through in things that Matlock did or said.

The Legal Drama Matlock DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs

Andy Griffith was the main star of the TV drama Matlock featuring the role of Ben Matlock. The American Legal show was broadcasted on NBC channel the 23rd September, 1986 and cancelled on 8th May, 1992. The show will be again aired on ABC from 5th November, 1992 to 7th May 1995.

The TV series were identical to Perry Mason on CBS where Matlock, the main character, had the mission to find the criminals and face them. This confrontation mainly takes place in a dark court room at the end of the episode. The only difference with the Mason show is that Matlock secures always the acquittal from the jury while Mason used to declare the guilt of the suspect in a pre-trial hearing.

The American spectators can watch the series either on WGN America or Hallmark Movie Channel on cable TV. Later on the show was aired on Hiatus channel instead of Hallmark starting May 2009 with property rights to the same network. The main role of the TV drama Ben Matlock was played by the actor Andy Griffith. The character is respected by many people with a simple and unpretentious personality.

He is a very popular and uncooperative defense lawyer inspired from the attorney Ben Baker. Matlock almost solves all the cases he gets during the show mainly when no one is sure of his victory. Most of the cases, you will find that the person questioned by Matlock during the hearing is the murderer.

The character of Matlock is a Harvard law school graduate who works in Atlanta in Georgia State. He is living in a farmhouse in suburbs. He usually goes the crime scenes to find any hints about the real murderer. The clothing of the character is very differentiable because of his gray trademark suit.

He used to ride Ford Crown Victoria models in a gray color all over the nine seasons of the show. In fact, the actor Andy Griffith used Ford brand during the 1960s for his shows.

Matlock is a character that does not like to spend money and likes a lot hot dogs. This fondness for hot dogs will later be explained in the episode “Murder Two of Joyce Burditt’s Diagnosis.” In fact, Matlock will put the blame on Dr. Mark Sloan played by Dick Van Dyke for convincing him to invest in 8-track cartridges. The investment will not be profitable and Matlock will lose his $5000.

Therefore, he will be obliged to wear cheap suits and eat hot dogs. The writers used Matlock’s stinginess and fondness for hot dogs to make some comedy on the show. Therefore, the sense of humor of Andy Griffith was apparent in some scenes of the show.
