The Big Valley is an American television Western which ran on ABC from 1965 to 1969. It was created by A.I. Bezzerides and Louis F. Edelman. The producer was Levy-Gardner-Laven. Associate producer Lou Morheim performed the same function on the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven. The stirring theme music was composed by George Duning. Paul Henreid, of Casablanca fame, directed a number of episodes. Four Star Television produced the series.

The TV series was based loosely on the Hill Ranch located at the western edge of Calaveras County, not far from Stockton (one episode places the Barkley Ranch a few hours ride from town while another has Jarrod riding past a Calaveras County sign on his way to the TV series' ranch). The Hill Ranch existed from 1855 until 1931, exceeded 1,000 acres, and had the Mokelumne River running through it. Lawson Hill ran the ranch until he was murdered in 1861. His wife Euphemia (aka "Auntie Hill") then became the matriarch. During their marriage they had four children, one daughter and three sons. Today, the location of the ranch is covered by the waters of Lake Camanche. A California State historical marker standing at Camanche South Shore Park mentions the historic ranch.

The famous American Western series “The Big Valley” was first broadcasted from ABC channel on 15 September 1965. It continued to run until 19 May 1969. Barbara Stanwyck was main lead, and played a role of a widower from California. The series was produced by Levy-Gardner-Laven, and it was created by Louis F. Edelman and A.I. Bezzerides.

Hill Ranch was where the series was loosely based. It was located in Calaveras County at western edge, which is near Stockton. Few episodes had different locations like Barkley Ranch and Jarrod. The Hill Ranch came into being in 1855 and remained till 1931. It had an area more than 1000 acres. The Mokelumne River used to pass through it. The ranch was under administration of Lawson Hill who got murdered in 1861. His widow Euphemia who was known as Aunti Hill, became the matriarch. The couple had three sons and a daughter. Later Lake Camanche covered the ranch by its waters. The historic ranch is mentioned now by California state marker which is standing at Camanche South Shore Park.

Characters:

Victoria Barkley: The character was played by Barbara Stanwyck. The wealthy Barkley family, who used to live in Stockton in central Californian valley, was the owners. Victoria was widow from Barkley family. He was also in lead character. Initially Barbara Stanwyck declined the role but later appeared from episode 103 to 112.

Jarrod Thomas Barkley: The character was played by Richard Long. He was the eldest son of the family and was respected in his profession of attorney. His role was of a responsible, sensible, and cool minded Barkley son who administered all of the business and legal affairs of family and business. Normally he was a lawful person but when needed, he used violence as his tool as well. He was married for a shorter time, in an episode, when his wife was murdered. He revenged by killing the killer of his wife with his bare hands.

Nick Barkley: The character was played by Peter Breck. He was a short tempered younger son of Barkley. He was manager of the family ranch. He used to do fist fighting, and had a recognizable outfit of black leather vests and gloves, and a large black hat. Many a times he had fights with his own brother, but beneath the surface, he was a caring and loving person with carefree nature. His sense of humor was also good and was ready to sacrifice anything for his family. Peter Breck appeared in 111 episodes, missing only one, making him highest appearing cast member.

Audra: The character was played by Linda Evans. She was daughter of Victoria Barkley. She was a brave and straight forward lady. Her performed stunts were as daring as of her brothers. She also tried to seduce Heath to expose his fraud of claiming to be her father’s son. In the 3rd, 4th, and final season, the role of Linda Evans was much reduced due to her desire of spending more time with her husband John Derek.
