The gothic soap
opera that took the attraction because of creating a new dimension of
television opera and got huge popularity is the Dark Shadows. It was
broadcasted by the ABC television network and ran from June 27, 1966
to April 2, 1971. The creator of the show was Dan Curtis, he told a
dream that he had. It was about a girl who started a long train
journey to reach a big mansion. One of the stories of this show is
the “bible”. It was written by Art Wallace. He didn’t mention
any kind of supernatural element in the story but it became bold
because after six months of this episode the concept of ghost was
occurred.
The director was
inspired by the 1961’s film “The Pit and the Pendulum” and
which was written and directed by Roger Corman. In the series Dark
Shadows the stories were taken from the usual day by day occurrences.
Then the writer added some extra supernatural characters and
additional stories to make it more attractive. The most common
stories were taken from the Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Turn of the
Screw, and Wuthering Heights etc.
Suddenly in the run
of Dark Shadows, a role of vampire Barnabas Collins was played by
played by Jonathan Frid and it made the TV show huge popular among
the young people. The Dark Shadows not only featured the vampire but
also some additional like werewolves, ghosts, zombies, man-made
monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel, and the story of parallel
universe etc were also described in this series. In most of the
episodes the set of actors were same and for the not-availability of
the actors the same role was played by other characters too. Art
Wallace was the prime writer but Malcolm Marmorstein also created the
characters like Barnabas Collins, Sam Hall, Gordon Russell, and
Violet Welles etc.
Dark Shadow was
different from others and the main reason of attraction was the
atmospheric interior, histrionic performances, excellent storylines,
and an unusually adventurous music score. Nowadays the music is said
to be camp classic. The popular director Tim Burton and pop icon
Madonna was fan of this series. Child Johnny Depp was inspired by the
character Barnabas Collins and teamed with Tim Burton to make a
theatrical film adaptation.
